Harriers explore new fells...

30th August, 2025.

Across the last few weeks, Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers have taken on new challenges outside of their normal races.

First up was Olivia Mulligan who took part in an exciting 4 mile uphill race at Skiddaw, Cumbria on 15 August.

Organized by British Athletics, the race was part of the Senior Uphill Only Trial for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships so there were many elite runners taking part and the course is designed to replicate the World Championship course in Canfranc in the Pyrenees.

The route started at a parking bay at Dodd Wood, following a marked track through the woods to the base of the ridge which then takes in Ullock Pike, Long Side, around Carl Side and tup the rising traverse path to the summit of Skiddaw.

Having entered on a bit of a whim a week before, Olivia has been inspired to enter again next year and will focus on some specific training.

She said "It was brutal, as expected. But brilliant, as hoped for...It was insanely challenging and also very humbling to be surrounded by such amazing athletes."
